National Apprenticeship Week 2018

Nathaniel Chappelow - Apprentice Project Manager

Hello, my name’s Nathaniel Chappelow, I’m 18 years old and completed my A-Levels in August 2017.

After working at a retail store for a few months whilst looking for an apprenticeship, I got offered the position here at Cox Automotive as an Apprentice Project Manager.

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

After completing my A-Levels last year and receiving an offer from Leeds University I decided that I wasn’t ready to study full time again and instead I wanted to work and study at the same time. An apprenticeship lent itself to this perfectly so I just started applying.

Why did you choose Project Management?

In July 2016 I completed work experience at Highways England where I worked closely with a Project Manager for two weeks. This experience opened my eyes to the world of project management and after doing some more research into the career, I thought it suited my skills really well.

What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?

Currently with the work I am completing I enjoy seeing my work have an outcome, and the positive impact it is having for the business.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of doing an apprenticeship?

If you aren’t one hundred percent decided on going to university but know what career you want to go in to I would certainly recommend researching whether there are any apprenticeships in that field. Apprenticeships offer the best of both worlds; you still get relevant qualifications but gain invaluable work experience and skills from working at a company. You also earn a good salary!
